Automation Controls Engineer

Position Location:  Orlando, FL

Job Description:  Tompkins’ Material Handling Integration Department is responsible for the design, specification and commissioning of Material Handling Systems for our customers. This position requires a self-motivated individual with experience in installing and troubleshooting electrical automation controls systems. Candidate must have experience with industrial controls including motors, solenoids and photo eyes. In this position you will be responsible for participating in the design, integration, testing and commissioning of automated Material Handling Systems in a distribution environment. The Automation Controls Engineer works closely with the Software Engineer, Applications Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, subcontractors, and the team’s project manager throughout the life cycle of the project. The Controls Project Engineer reports directly to the Departments Executive VP

Job Tasks & Duties: (These include but are not limited to)

  • Participate in the design, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of electrical control systems
  • Propose technical solutions for complex and multidisciplinary problems to the Project Manager and provide input to the technical roadmap for the department.
  • Write Controls Functional Specification / Description of Operation
  • Prepare Detailed Design documents (i.e. Controls Architecture, Electrical Installation, Panel Schematics, etc.)
  • Develop equipment technical and performance specifications for vendor selection process
  • Review and evaluate vendor technical proposals to ensure they meet functional and technical requirements and participate in vendor selection
  • VFD application, programming, and trouble-shooting
  • Trouble-shooting of automated material handling equipment (i.e., motors, scanners, VFDs, photoeyes, encoders, etc.) and other electrical control equipment
  • Write, debug and test soft PLC code using Steeplechase, as needed
  • Understanding, interpreting and following applicable procedures, standards, electrical codes, OSHA rules, and other applicable regulations
  • Reporting project progress and status to the Project Manager, other project team members, and the Department’s EVP
  • Communicating and working closely with other groups within Tompkins and the project team (i.e., software engineer, mechanical engineer, project management, consulting, sales/proposal department, and installation manager)
  • Work closely with clients and subcontractors
  • Identifying, initiating and implementing improvement activities
  • This position requires occasional on-call after-hours support

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, computer Science, or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in design and implementation of material handling systems or industrial controls systems
  • Working knowledge of automated material handling systems (conveyors, sorters, AS/RS, etc)
  • Technical proficiency with industry computer-based software such as AutoCAD
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills
  • Proven skills in understanding and designing PLC programs and industrial networks (i.e. Ethernet, TCP/IP, Profinet, Profibus, Devicenet, etc)
  • Experience using Steeplechase is a plus
  • Willingness to travel to client sites
